where in the world is danielle?

A common question we have asked ourselves time and time again. She likes to disappear for a while... at the moment, though, we do know she was in Morocco last week and is in Japan this week. The exotic life of my littlest sister.

She sent us a few pics and the following email the other day:

Morocco was delicious in a dusty, Saharan, faded-pink-walls-against-a-turquoise-door, sort of way. Everything was artistic, even the sewer tops, which of course I took pictures of. I visited the tanneries where they create dyes. Did you know that everything that's dyed blue in Morocco comes from pigeon poo?

Examples of walls. Shaded to perfection.

It is horrifying how many people they cram onto one motorbike. Small infants literally dangle off the back wheel.

Photobucket
Artwork : this would be YOU, mom, in a 3rd world country. No lovely, air-conditioned art galleries serving wine & cheese ... just a few laundry pins and a string.

Photobucket
Me, sweaty. See the fresh round bread loaf in my hands?

Photobucket
Smiling.

Photobucket
Hotel. See how the orange blossom tree BURSTS out onto the center courtyard . . .

Photobucket
And because of the courtyard orange blossom tree, freshly-squeezed orange juice EVERY morning . . .

Photobucket
Tedious work.

Photobucket
Took a lot of shots of my feet. Couldn't help myself! The floors were so aesthetic.

Photobucket
Fresh, n'est-ce pas?

Did I mention she's fluent in French?

Photobucket
Morocco, at twilight.

Beautiful, non? I love living vicariously through my siblings.

Mmm, yes, Morocco. I think: spices and colors and fabrics and earth and markets and old stories... It's always been one of our destinations: Morocco, Bali, Burkina Faso...

I'd like to say I was supposed to go with her, bc she begged, "Audrey, COME! This is where we're MEANT to GO!!" But we all know that there was no way I could go right now...

: ( Alas, one day... Just like Penny Lane said.

Anybody ever seen the movie Almost Famous? One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES. I adooooooooooore that movie. AND I have always been obsessed with Morocco. Thus, when Penny Lane, a "Band-aid" or band groupie (Kate Hudson) in the movie has the same dream to go to Morocco, I fell in love even more with the idea of Moroccan reds and tangerine walls and bowls of blue powder (which we now know is unromantically pigeon poo).

The whole movie she's all talk about some dream world where hopes and wishes come true. Till finally, by the end of the movie, she realizes that this IS the real world. Life is NOW. Now to be lived, to be fulfilled, to be enjoyed. Dreams only come true if you make them come true. So the last scene, there she is at the ticket counter, with her elegant hat, dark shades in hand.

"Where to?" the attendant asks.

Penny Lane: "Morocco. A seat by the window, please."

Sigh!! Yesss... She went. She did it. I love that. I depend on that. Whatever it is we dream, we can make it happen. I hope...

One more quote from Almost Famous:

Penny Lane: When we go to Morocco, I think we should have completely different names and be completely different people.

ha.

ps. belén was listening to the moroccan song playing, and she was SO into it. she does this thing where she backs up to the couch--i suppose for more stability--and then she reeeeeeally gets into it, bouncing her whole body, her little hips, her arms in the air, one hand behind her head (how does she learn these things??? that move is NOT mine : ) hilarious.

Dani, (when/if you ever read this)
I love that pic of you holding the bread.

Would you be a doll & go to the pyramids of Egypt for me? I've been dying to go, so I'll just have to live vicariously through Noelle, living vicariously through you. Take beautiful pics for me. I love how you can make a pitcher of orange juice look exquisite.

PS. I love how even in a far away, 3rd world country, your feet are beautifully polished.
