mexico city driving

You must be fearless, you must be aggressive, and you must learn to stick your hand out the window, because (forget blinkers) you can do anything as long as you've got your hand out the window. Need to make a left-hand turn from the right-hand lane of a three-lane freeway? Hand out the window. Need to run the red light and hold up traffic coming from the perpendicular direction? Hand out the window. Need to go down a one-way street the wrong way and hold up traffic coming from the opposite direction? No problem. Hand out the window and a blaring horn as an added bonus (that one gets tricky).

It's how it works here. So I've learned. And thinking I was pretty savvy, too. But today I got into my first accident here in Mexico City (I don't count the motorcyclist who rammed into me looking for a bribe). I side-swiped a taxi. I hate those taxi drivers. It was probably out of subconscious loathing. Or maybe because I was on my cell phone (illegally). Either way, I now have a nice red scrape on the right side of my front bumper. Something to add to the ten other scrapes around the perimeter of my vehicle. I'm just trying to fit in with the locals.

Bruce's car, on the other hand, has not a single scratch. The guy lays towels down the backseat of his car and freaks out if there's a little yellow curb paint on his tire (it came out of nowhere, Bruce). But amazingly he drives like a crazy Mexican.

So then I had the following conversation with B.

Me: I got in an accident today, B.

B: What?!? Mom, why do you have so many scrapes on your car and Dad's car is perfect?

Me: Well, I drive more than Dad does around this city.

B: Well, if you drive more than Dad does, you should be a better driver. But you're not. And now you have a really messed-up car.

Geez, dude. Harsh much?

so you gave the taxi a little love pat? city-style? did you remember to stick your arm out the window afterward? : ) (you didn't get hurt, right?)

bruce... confession. one of those times you took us to the movies in your car, we dropped a peanut m&m; it was night out, we couldn't see, and it accidentally smooshed into the black interior. but you probably never realized it bc you have layers of towels back there.

i just made that up. but it could've happened. bc you do have towels. and we did eat m&ms back there. and i do tend to drop them. and we did go to the movies... a few times.

love you bruce.

Noelle!!! You are a life saver!! When I think I'm alone in this world- your blog cheers me up and I realize I'm not. I know we don't have any interaction by blogging but I feel like we're still best buds when I read your blog:-)
I have wanted to cry lately because the only darn thing Tucker will eat for dinner are those stupid Dinosaur chicken nuggets from Costco or their mini corn dogs. I think I'm a pretty good cook but Tucker won't eat any of it!!! So every night I revert to my Dinosaur back up dinner. Luckily he loves green beans and dried fruit, but seriously!!!
Oh and just so you know- I freak out when it comes to food storage. I don't have asthma, but whenever I hear "Food Storage" I need an inhaler!!
I've been stocking up on water bottles just to find out they expire!! Why didn't I know that?!?

Love it. Driving in this city terrifies me. Last night an unmarked police truck pulled up behind me (I was alone) and turning his sirens on. Talk about instant heart attack! Thankfully, he went around me. I have taken one trick from Bruce though. I have heard he drives with one hand on the wheel and the other hand on the horn. I find myself doing that quite often. Oh, and I did put my mirrors in the other day and squeeze down a little tiny street next to a REALLY big bus. Talk about becoming mexican!!!

You forgot about the magic Hazard Lights. Put them on and you can pull over or stop in the middle of the street or just about anywhere else.
