I finished The Glass Castle tonight. And since I've spent the past few moments reflecting on this book, I'm a little teary now. Her life and circumstances seem surreal to me. I have no conception, no reference. I am marveling at her fortitude and familial loyalty. My childhood and life circumstances are so opposite from hers, though we arrived at birth with the same innate human needs and on the same American soil, and I think what I might be feeling a little bit is... shame?
I got in a car accident today. Like a real one. Not a side swipe. I wish it was a side swipe where I could pay someone $35 like the last time and be on my way. I spent an hour-and-a-half outside my apartment with the people in the other car while we waited for my insurance people to show up. Meanwhile, my children (along with Annie's children - she might hurt me when she reads this) hung out alone in the apartment with B in charge (my maid is gone for the weekend). Luckily, he is mature for his age, a master cajoler, and knows how to work the DVD player.
I think I will have a party at my house next week - birthday/housewarming party. It will likely be just adults, but I am debating over whether or not to go true mexican and include a piñata. Que piensas?
I'm going to buy an Aztec calendar tomorrow at the market. It's part of Bruce's birthday gift. He's been wanting one ever since we moved here. Not just like, "That would be nice to have." More like, "We have GOT to own this, Noelle!!!" One of these days I'll post a picture of the rainstick he coveted forever and finally bought at the Teotihuacan pyramids, too. I still can't figure out why. He wants the strangest things. What does this say about me?
I'm craving Sour Patch Kids right now. My mouth is watering and grimacing just thinking about it.
My brother, Nathan, arrives tomorrow night. I can't wait. But let's just all say a long and hard prayer for him to make it across the border safely, okay?
And this had me cracking up. See the book review by mlcnlv:
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK ..., October 13, 2005

You will be very unhappy with this book. Here is an example of why: Recipe for "Mac and Cheese"
1 box macaroni and cheese.
1 stick butter
1/2 cup milk.
Are you kidding me!!!
Hilarious.

My mom is here and was telling me about that book, and then we read your blog! Weird! She was amazed at the book too.
I am glad that you guys were ok!
I will have to read that book. I've been looking for a good one since all I want to do is sit these days.
I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. I am glad that you are ok. I hope your car is ok and doesn't cost a ton to get fixed.
You are right, B is responsible. I would trust him (if there was a dvd player around) =)
Have fun with your bro!
hold the phone -- go back to the part where you said you were in an accident. a real accident. everyone okay? you okay? how's your vehicle?

b is very responsible for his age, and i am sure he enjoyed being in charge for the hour and a half :P
That was a great book. I'll have to give it to Melissa to borrow. It was great seeing you! Wish I could have seen you more! That is pretty crazy that Bruce's parents are moving to Houston! And finally, I'm glad that everyone is okay from your car accident-scary!
