news and commentary

So my dear friend Erin emails me this afternoon to tell me she heard about a plane crash in Mexico City, close to where I live and is wanting to know if we're okay, etc. I had no idea what she was talking about, so I went and CNN-ed it:

Mexican interior minister among dead in plane crash

There were also whispers of drug cartel involvement. Lovely. Apparently, this crash happened like half a mile away from where I live. 7pm last night. Ask me if heard anything at all. I know I'm not known for my impeccable hearing. (I walk around with ipod earphones in my ear half the time and our motto at the gym is "Turn it up louder!"). But seriously. Apparently nothing short of an atomic bomb will interrupt us from living our daily grind. Amazing.

Now, on to our new president-elect. I came across this article that seems to fit my sentiments about this democratic turn of events.

America Has Chosen a President

I feel a sense of privilege to be a living witness to this hallmark moment in American history, but I also feel a sense of urgency and wariness. And I am reminded that there truly is no time to procrastinate or be lax or less than vigilant and stalwart in my faith. Now, more than ever. And it begins in my home. It will be my home that is the only place of refuge for my children for the values we hold sacred and dear. When the laws of our society become so far removed, where else will they be able to learn the laws of God?

What an amazing web site you found on the election. It has it right on. I'm excited about all that has happened in the past two days, but scared at the same time. Things will change from Nov. 4th on, but hopefully the American people will continue to make it in the right direction. :) I loved your last paragraph, there is no better place than in the home and no better time than now to teach our children!

I know I can't believe how big the kids are! Both Landon and L and Emma and M. They're so grown up! It's going way too fast.
I miss your sweet smile I sure could use a fresh dose of Noelle's humor around the ward! :)

Kris got an e-mail minutes after it happened (you know, since the drug cartels are one of the reasons he's down here in Mexico) Let me tell you, I was going off on all sorts of conspiracy theories and numero uno was HELLO...Could they have crashed any closer to the President's house? But it was ruled an accident (my FOOT it was an accident) but I will now no longer read books about the Mexican Drug Cartels because I am now a paranoid freak and think they are capable of more than they actually are.

You are not alone in your thoughts about the election. I had a really hard time with this election because I was so disapointed with our choices and being the hard core political junkie I am it was hard for me to be unable to get behind either one.

I am so grateful that I am not the only mother who feels the same way you do on the ever increasing importance of our homes as a place of refuge. It completely freaked me out to hear that some of our temples were being protested at following the election. Some members of the church took active part in something they believed in and the entire church is being blamed with such hatred. You are right, the values we hold sacred and dear are going to have to be strong in our homes since they are under attack outside of them.
