green jello

Did I tell you yet about the lack of plates and utensils at this Stake RS Broadcast dinner last Saturday? Each ward was supposed to bring food of some sort. I belong to an English-speaking ward full of American expats, so we had the normal Utah Mormon spread, which included a green jello concoction, mashed potatoes, broccoli salad and some version of that ramen-noodle chicken salad. (Still others of us were extremely lazy and Costco-ed it. Yours truly). We were the most popular table that night among our Mexican counterparts.

But we had nothing - NOTHING - onto which we could scoop our green jello or mashed potatoes... a plate-less and utensil-less RS dinner? This would never fly in the U.S. Utah would faint. So let me just tell you how proud I was of my fellow American expat sisters who abstained from even a batting of the eye at this most interesting predicament we'd found ourselves in. This food wasn't going to go to waste, was it? Our Mexican sisters would ensure it. And anyway, this is why God gave us hands.

Some of us found a few stray napkins. A few ingenious simply ripped off pieces of foil from the mashed potato cover. Still others found plastic lids on which to partake. And what was so wrong with just cupping our hand? So we scooped that green jello concoction into our mouths with our bare hands. And we scooped with zeal.

Fluff, pomp and circumstance? Not a problem here.

p.s. October! Let the festivities begin.

Ok. Still trying to visualize that situation. Can't quite wrap my head around that one. BUT, it does remind me a jello slurping contest we had on your kitchen floor for YW one Wednesday night. Now that was funny.

I think you're right -- Utah would faint. :) Hooray for scooping!

too funny. Why don't they just tell everyone to bring their own plates and utensils?

Ok, I am outing myself! I am the comletely not-up-to-speed RS president of the Lomas Ward who did not anticipate that the Stake was not going to supply said utensils and plates. Ugh, I have a lot to learn. =) Glad you can look back and laugh... I am still too embarrassed to yet. My day will come. I am just glad I am not in Utah. I would feel really bad for all the fainting woman.

That is awesome. That's my kind of party. Just makes it all the more memorable. Hope you guys are doing well.

PS: Love Love Love the headband/flowers you gave to Abbie. Waiting for your sister in law to get off maternity leave so I can order more! :)

I'm sad I missed out! Rule of thumb here is bring your own stuff, it took me a while to get the hang of that too.

I just LOVE the way you describe this. Josh was laughing as I told him I was one of the lucky ones who got a napkin. However, after mashed potatoes, green jello, and chinese chicken salad, there was not much left of said napkin. You also forgot to mention my ingenious idea of using a large cracker as a fork. hehe. Good times in Mexico...good times. I may have to steal this for my blog...

too bad you didn't catch any pix of the said scraping, finger-licking, and primitive shoveling. but i suppose you're messy fingers would've just ruined your camera, huh : )

{i'm laughing imagining you shoveling away with the rest of the hungry females. the kinda hunched-over position that would look really guilty if someone should walk into the room unexpectedly, and you were to look over your cave-woman shoulder... haha.}
