somebody tell me how to raise a kid like this, please

This kid probably doesn't even own a Wii. Dang. Bruce and I are failing as parents. But seriously, I love that I came across this after a looooong day of sibling rivalry and name calling and unwanted physical contact just (and I'm talking just) as I was pondering about how to raise kind, thoughtful, humble, teachable, ethical, resourceful and service-oriented children.

But then I remembered... though our children come to Earth with their inherent characteristics of personality and spiritual tendencies, habits are learned. Pressure! I am human, and I am flawed. But I'm going to try harder. For my kids. How else will they learn?

Noelle you DO raise awesome kids, did you forget about your post that you had just done about L? Look at that face in the picture below and tell me he won't grow up to be helping others and making them feel great about themselves. He IS in fact awesome! Who do you think he got that characteristic from? Its in the family genes babe!!!

Noelle, I think you and Bruce are awesome kids. One thing (many things obviously reinforced) I learned on my BP MS Bike Ride was there are no short cuts to riding a bike 165 miles. Each mile is earned and I think with children we need to help them understand the principle of putting in the work/energy to a task/chore/responsibility so they can be proud with their achievements.

Amen to your Dad and Dana. You should know that while Spencer's desire and ability to demonstrate friendship and love are truly extraordinary, he is also a very normal teenage-boy and does, in fact, own a Wii. Keep up the great work, my friend. My daughters and I follow your blog faithfully. We are grateful for your own extraordinary example of gratitude, love and joy!

touched my heart. How tough it is to parent in today's "i want" world. You and Bruce do a great job finding balance in the kids lives.
