So when it comes to baby showers after bebe numero uno, some feel it is unnecessary. Especially if one is having a baby of the same sex as your first (or first few). Others claim that since every baby is special, every baby deserves a shower. I am of the latter general disposition and love to throw showers for my expectant friends and their multiple offspring - except when it comes to me.
I do not like showers for myself. In fact, I hate showers for myself. And it is not because I am trying to be meek or unassuming. Please. I am a vain and prideful brat. When it is your shower, you feel pressured into looking presentable, because all eyes are on you. Like I can't very well walk into a shower in my honor wearing my regular black Athleta pants and ratty sweatshirt like I'd really like to be doing. I have to put on real clothes. Constricting clothes. And wear make up and maybe try to blow dry my hair. I am asked lots of questions about the baby and about how miserable I must be feeling by this point in time. Then we might play a few games and, since I am the guest of honor, sometimes I am asked to be the judge of said games. And you know what? It exhausts me. It physically exhausts me. Because what I really want to do is lie down at home in my pjs and eat cold cereal.
But right now I live in Mexico. And Mexicans will jump on any excuse to get together and celebrate something. I wanted to slink away unawares and have my baby on the sly, but there are several sets of amigas that will not let the sleeping beast lie and there are several showers in the works. I should be more gracious, no? Just another reason I'm convinced I'll be living in the projects of the afterlife while my other, kinder, more magnanimous friends will be living up life eternal in sparkly and grandiose mansions.
A few pics with some of my Mexican amigas from one of the showers. And in one of these pics, I think I pretty much look like how I feel these days (gross, swollen and like I need a haircut... appropriate).

But let me clarify about how much I love my friends. I love my Church friends, I love my gringa friends, I love my Mexican friends. Friends enrich our lives and I am grateful for every single one of them. I am just lazy and vain and ungracious.
Lastly, did you know Audrey is pregnant? Due around the beginning of March. I am thrilled to have another niece or nephew in the works!! But unfortunately, she is as cheerful during pregnancy as I am - and a lot more sick than I ever was. In one of our sisterly email chats this morning, Aud vented about her puddle state of nausea, vomit and vertigo. I vented about my acute back pain. And then D wrote to say we are making her want to cut out her ovaries with a spoon. I hope my sisters are living in the projects of the afterlife with me.

Guess what?! I'm pregnant too! Due in March as well. in a "puddle" state (is that how you put it?) like your sister. But I'm really glad to be having another baby.
I like that we both posted about our showers today. That's fun.
And I think that anyone who goes through pregnancy (no matter how many times) deserves a party of some sort.
noelle, i seriously think you have more friends in just that room, in Mexico, than I have in the whole world. sad for me; good for you. it's good to have good friends. quit being a brat and let them pamper you;) isn't it funny how weird we get when we're pregnant about the way we look. it's like we suddenly think that everyone will only ever remember us with bad hair and a swollen face, that they'll forget the way we've always looked and suddenly only remember us as the girl with acne and a big belly. we're weird...but we're all weird together apparently.
whens the big day by the way, i keep forgetting?
audrey, i'm so happy for you. i'm due at the end of February....the 28th. we'll probably be within a week of each other or so. fun. please don't be sending any comparison belly pics of your small asian self my way;) i bet you look adorable.
oh, congrats to Aud! That is awesome. :)
you always look great in all your pics--very photogenic! what kind friends you have to throw you a shower--so very nice :)
alas I am more anti-shower too. we had a wave of women having babies this past year and I swear I was getting a baby shower invite every week. it was a little overkill. the mexican culture would not suit me with all their partying ways ;)
i love a party.
but not when i am feeling pregnant.
and don't tell me i don't look pregnant, bc it's about how i feel, and i feel pregnant.
you know??
but you CAN be kind of a spoiled brat sometimes, noey. buck up for party sake : )
as for all the other pregos who commented, congrats!!! bebe time : ) here's to big bellies all around.
hey! i don't think i'm a spoiled brat. i'm just a snarky brat. but it is because people doing things for me makes me super, super uncomfortable. it's my nature. i just don't like it when people do stuff for me. and i'm controlling and am a natural introvert. you know how i am... this is why i can do things like go to dinner and a movie alone or why i can deal with bruce's traveling schedule.
Aim high, my friend! But if you do end up in the projects, I'll come and stay for a while. ;)
And I totally agree- friends are the best!
